The YE County Final for Wiltshire was held at the Excalibur Building, near Sparcells, on 10 May – on a warm sunny evening.
The event was hosted by Excalibur’s James Phipps – a Swindon man, now founder and Executive Chairman, and one of the UK’s most successful IT entrepreneurs. He gave a highly motivational address to the participants, stressing the importance of interpersonal skills and vision to a successful business career. A group of judges then went around the stands in turn, questioning and scoring the young YE entrepreneurs on their approach to setting up and running a business.
There was a break for refreshments, that the Club had sponsored, and Andrew Martin of YE expressed great thanks. The Club had a particular interest in two schools: St Josephs where Rtn Mike Dunn had been mentoring their programme and Commonweal which Rtn Roy had evaluated. Although the top prize and entry into the Regional round went to Abbeyfield School Chippenham, both our schools did very well against a strong field that also included Dauntsey’s.
St. Joseph’s teams were placed in the top three nine times, and won 4 awards in total, as follows:-
Squish: 1) Under 16 overall winner & 2) Best presentation award
Treats so Sweet: 1) Teamwork
Lavish 1) Ignition
The Commonweal Team, JAR’d Up, did exceptionally well, winning the 1) Leadership 2) Brand creation & 3) Individual awards.
This is a most worthwhile programme, and I know Rtn Andrew Martin would be very pleased if we continued our support in 2018/19.
